Our Story

Caroline Pendray and John Maddock envisioned the creation of a unique space where artists could not only showcase their work but also openly share the profound stories and transformative journeys behind their creations. Inspired by Caroline's extensive background in the mental health sector, spanning 14 years of dedicated practice as a trained to master’s level art therapist, and John's experience in supporting individuals grappling with mental health and addiction challenges, they embarked on a joint venture to establish Liberation Art Gallery at the heart of Brighton, nestled in its renowned jewellery Lanes.

Caroline, drawing upon her profound understanding of the therapeutic power of art as a medium for self-expression and healing, brought a nuanced perspective to the gallery's mission. Together with John, they set out to pioneer a distinctive approach, seamlessly integrating a therapeutic model within a mainstream retail environment. This concept aimed to cultivate a safe and easily accessible space for artists, recognizing that many of them turn to art as a means of self-therapy and self-care.

Their vision materialized in the vibrant city of Brighton, where Liberation Art Gallery now stands as a testament to the fusion of artistic expression and mental well-being. This gallery goes beyond the traditional exhibition space, serving as a haven for artists to not only showcase their creativity but also to embark on a journey of personal healing.

Here at Liberation Art Gallery, we have three levels that encapsulate a therapeutic approach to art and mental well-being. The third level houses a therapy space, staffed by qualified and experienced art therapists. The second level serves as a dynamic workshop and gallery space, fostering creativity and community engagement. The first level is dedicated to the main exhibition space, showcasing artwork that explores themes around mental health and well-being. We aim not only to exhibit the incredible artwork but also thought-provoking work by artists who may have experienced significant trauma and are already creating stunning art for their well-being in response to various mental health related themes such as body dysmorphia, grief, anxiety or struggling to manage addiction.

The mission of Liberation Art Gallery extends beyond the physical space, engaging with the community through various activities such as exhibitions, discussions, workshops, and artist talks. We actively collaborate with local organizations and mental health professionals, aiming to challenge the stigma around mental health and raise awareness, provide resources, and offer therapeutic support. For example, we are working with Brighton and Hove schools’ mental health service to provide a group art therapy service to secondary aged young people currently not in school for various reasons, which is also kindly sponsored by Cass Art. We also have an upcoming exhibition, 'From Within,' in which we will be showcasing artwork that focuses on catharsis and healing by exploring the connection between art creation and well-being.

Liberation Art Gallery emphasizes the importance of self-reflection for emerging and established artists, encouraging them to connect with the community, use art as a tool for communication, and prioritize their well-being. Looking ahead, we aspire to deepen its connection with the community, expand its range of workshops, events, and exhibitions, and continue fostering a vibrant artistic community with a consistent focus on mental health and well-being.
