Q&A with director Caroline Pendray

1. What inspired you, as an art therapist, to establish Liberation Art Gallery as a platform for artists and what opportunities has this opened up?

As a qualified and registered Art therapist, I recognise the power of art as a means of self-expression and healing. The aim was to provide a platform for artists, both emerging and established, to showcase their work and express themselves creatively.

Overall, championing art that prioritises mental health and well-being requires sensitivity, inclusivity, and a commitment to fostering understanding and support. It has opened up so many connections with artists and visitors and has also opened up conversations around mental health which we feel are so important to have.

2. How does Liberation Art Gallery define and promote art that fosters good mental health and well-being and has this had an impact on visitors?

Liberation Art Gallery aims to be an advocate for the therapeutic benefits of art. We showcase artwork that explores catharsis and healing and we promote our artists' unique stories and experiences as we feel that the journey is as important as the final piece. We aim to challenge the stigma attached to mental health by raising awareness about the therapeutic benefits of art and its potential to promote mental health and well-being.

Through promoting our aims, visitors to the gallery often comment on how exhibiting artists works and bios have resonated with them. Offering a sense of validation and understanding for those who have or are currently experiencing similar challenges.

3. How do you see art therapy and the gallery's mission complementing each other in supporting individuals' mental health journeys and also raising awareness?

When art therapy and the gallery's mission came together, a powerful synergy was integrated. The gallery can serve as a space where individuals can not only view and appreciate art but also engage in art therapy activities or workshops. This integration allows individuals to experience the therapeutic benefits of art firsthand, while also being exposed to a wider range of artistic expressions and perspectives.

The gallery has collaborated with registered and qualified art therapists to curate exhibitions or programs that specifically address mental health themes or provide a therapeutic experience. This collaboration can help reduce stigma surrounding mental health, raise awareness, and create a supportive environment for individuals on their journeys. It can provide individuals with an enriching experience, supporting their mental health by promoting self-expression and connection with the transformative power of art.

4. Could you describe the selection process for artists featured in the gallery, and how they align with the gallery's mission?

During the selection process, the curatorial team considers various factors such as the artistic quality, originality, and conceptual depth of the artworks. They also assess how well the artworks align with the gallery's mission.Ultimately, the goal is to curate a cohesive and engaging exhibition that reflects the gallery's mission and resonates with its audience.

The selected artworks should contribute to the gallery's overall vision and create meaningful and thought provoking experiences for visitors. We want members of the public to enjoy their experience here and take back something that maybe they weren’t expecting to.

5. In what ways does Liberation Art Gallery engage with the community and what activities does the gallery do?

Liberation Art Gallery organises exhibitions and hosts events such as discussions, workshops and artist talks, creating opportunities for dialogue and education.

Our workshop space often hosts birthdays, hen parties or even just a get together with friends or to meet new people. They are a space for people to have fun, connect and also try a creative subject that they may not have any prior experience with.

The gallery also actively collaborates with local organisation’s and mental health professionals, supporting community groups as we aim to raise awareness and provide resources. We hope to offer further opportunities for joint work.

6. Are there any upcoming exhibitions or projects that the gallery is particularly excited about?

We are looking forward to our up and coming exhibition, ‘From Within', which aims to showcase artwork that explores catharsis and healing by exploring the connection between art creating and well-being. This was the first exhibition theme we opened with last December so we are really excited to return to this theme.

We also have our artist reflective practices where we offer our artists a confidential space to create art, form connections and have open dialogue with other exhibiting artists. We talk about how things are going and also what they feel we can improve on. It’s always lovely to see our artists and catch up with them in person.

 7. How has the response been from the art community and the public regarding the gallery's focus?

There has been a growing recognition of the therapeutic benefits of art and its potential to promote mental health and healing. Many individuals and organisations within the art community have embraced this concept and have been actively promoting art as a means of self-expression, healing and raising awareness about mental health issues. However, we are the first retail Art Gallery of its kind to specialise in this area. Installing a therapeutic model into a mainstream gallery is Liberation Art Gallery’s new concept. We Aim to create a calming and inviting atmosphere for both exhibiting artists and visitors.

We offer on-site Art Therapy services provided by registered Art Therapists and creative workshops within the gallery. This can provide visitors with direct access to therapeutic support, expertise and artistic creativity. Our space aims to go beyond traditional retail experiences and provide visitors, in a non clinical environment, an opportunity to engage in self-care, relaxation, and personal growth while also enjoying the retail offerings. By combining the elements of therapy, creativity and retail, the aim is to create a unique and enriching experience that promotes overall well-being for visitors.

8. What advice do you have for emerging artists who are passionate about creating art that supports mental health, based on your experience with the gallery?

Self- reflection can provide valuable insights and inspiration for your artwork. Connect with the community and attend events, workshops and exhibitions to network and learn from others in the field. Use your art as a tool for communication. Art has the power to convey emotions and messages in unique ways. Use your artistic skills to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and promote conversations about mental health. Most importantly, prioritise your own well-being. Take care of yourself and seek support if needed as you navigate your artistic journey.

9. Where do you see the gallery in the next 5-10 years?

In the next five years, Liberation Art Gallery aims to become a leading space for artistic expression and connection. With our strong focus on therapeutic art and representing diverse voices, we plan to deepen our connection with the community through a broader range of traditional arts and crafts workshops, events and exhibitions.

Our main goal is to continue showcasing thought-provoking and unique creations and to continue fostering a vibrant artistic community while expanding our reach and impact, with a consistent focus on building awareness for mental health and wellbeing.

Liberation Art Gallery looks forward to a natural evolution, staying true to our mission of providing a welcoming and inspiring space for self-expression and the appreciation of the arts.
